Subject: Re: Researching my Spilde Ancestors

Hi Jason,
I'm replying to the e-mail you sent in the beginning of March.  I am impressed by your ability to track down Spildes(!), and I'm pleased that I happened to be included on your list.

Anyway, I had a look at your web site, and I understand you're looking primarily for information on "Anna Spilde", your great-great-grandmother (and biological mother of your great-grandfather "Adolph Glimme/Edward Cornelius Spilde")?

I did a search of the 1865 census http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/index-eng.htm; Ulvik district - i.e. the district covering Granvin/Spildo.  There is one "Anna Olsdotter" (i.e. Anna Olav/Olaf/Ole-sdaughter) at one of the Spildo farms listed as being 14 years old in 1865.  That would mean born 1851.  That would make this Anna the "right" age for being married to Amund Knudsen Glimme b. 1850.  Also this Anna is listed as having a brother Lars age 39 (i.e. b.1826).  The brother Lars is listed as running the farm in 1865.  That means he's the oldest (living) brother.  Lars's age means that the "John O. Spilde (1830-1917)" you mention as Anna Spilde's brother or uncle, could be a brother of Anna and Lars.  John too would be the "right" age - for a brother.  There's however no mention of a John in the cencus data.  Only the people living at the farm at the time of the census would be included, and if the theory holds(!) it would be likely that a younger brother (i.e. John ?), having no farm to take over, could have emigrated.

There's obviously an awful lot of "if's" in this theory!  Does it seem at all likely from the information you have?   If it does, it would be worthwhile to try to look up this family in the "Ættarbok for Granvin"; to check if this Anna has a brother John b. 1830.  I haven't got a copy here, but I could call my mother and get her to look it up.

I've included a copy of the relevant(?) 1865 census page below.  Best of luck with the ancestry research.

regards,

PS: "Spildo" is the traditional and present name of the farm(s).  "Spilde", and even "Spilden" as it was recorded in the 1865 census, are variants introduced by Danish officials, or certainly by people trained in Danish language and orthography.  The majority of present-day Spildes write their name "Spilde", but there are also some "Spildo"s.  The history behind that is that the Danes defined the spelling as "Spilde", and most people stuck with that.  Others, at the time when Norwegian national awakening was at it's height (early 1900s), changed the name back to the original, more truly "Norwegian" spelling: Spildo.

I noticed today that the State Historical Society of Wisconsin now has an online submission for birth, death, and marriage records research.  I may use this to check on my great great grandmother Anna Spilde to see if she was Anna Hansdatter or Anna Olavsdatter.  Hopefully complete enough records exist.

Also sending emails to Sidsel and Dag Spilde about info they provided about Anna Olavsdatter Spildo to follow up.
